In September of 2013 two classes and 56 students were coming out to the Sargent school garden every week. By June, 224 students across the district were learning science, math and english language arts in beautiful new vegetable gardens. Currently every kindergarten, first and second grade student in the district visits their school garden every week. That means that 800 Beacon youth are learning about fresh vegetables and whole foods. Parents, students, community members, teachers and local businesses pooled their resources to fund, build, plant and learn in these new outdoor classrooms. Hudson Valley Seed also partners with Common Ground Farm at J.V. Forrestal Elementary School to run the Beacon Farm to School Collaborative, which offers chef visits, monthly cafeteria taste tests, farm and garden visits, and more.
